Before I set out on my BBQ journey my entire knowledge of using wood for fuel consisted of chucking sticks / branches in an old drum when clearing the garden; the heat generated was crazy.
I remember it well . . . thick plumes of smoke used to fill the sky within seconds and I used to think to myself . . . “any second now, the neighbours are going to start shouting“.
Fast forward to now and I’m relatively comfortable using charcoal / lump wood, but I had not yet explored using logs / kindling.
When the team over at Ozpig contacted me asking if I’d be interested in working with them to generate content around their ‘Ozpig Series 2‘ product I jumped at the chance . . . and realised it was now time to step up my game and truly go back to basics . . . real wood fires!
Introducing Love Logs
Sure, I’d seen people posting braai images on Instagram discussing the benefits of woods such as Kameeldoring and Sekelbos but I wasn’t in that league and simply needed to source some good quality firewood.
I recalled seeing several posts from a company called Love Logs so went off to find out more and see if they could help me with my search.
The Love Logs Story
I’m one of those individuals who really likes to do their research before buying from a new company . . . it winds me up when you visit a website and you are presented with a lifeless shopping experience with no passion or background . . . people buy from people after all.
After reading the Love Logs story it was clear to me that this was a company I’d like to use.
That First Purchase
Despite having a nicely structured website with great information, I was still a little lost on exactly what I should order for my new Ozpig. I dropped Heather and Paul a message via their Instagram account and despite being 11:27pm I received a non-automated reply within minutes . . . now this is someone who is truly passionate about their business I thought.
We exchanged several messages covering factors such as hardwood v’s softwood and moisture content . . . and within a few minutes I had ordered a large fire pit fuel kit
What Happened Next
Instantly I received an email confirmation of my order (pretty standard I know), but a few minutes later I also received an email with a personal referral link to help spread the Love Logs . . . ‘love’ I guess!
This referral link not only provides £5 off a customers first order but it also allocates my good self with £5 store credit . . . a win win for everyone in my eyes . . . just imagine how many more crazy videos I could create with my kids with more fuel for the fire so to speak 😉
Anyway, another 2 hours passed and I received a message from DPD informing me that my parcel would be delivered the very next day . . . and by 11am, BOOM, there it was . . . faster than Just Eat I thought!
The First Burn
As I’ve already mentioned . . . I’m in no way experienced managing a real fire . . . but in the safe hands of Love Logs that didn’t matter . . . I just followed their guide (which I also received via email I should point out), and within 30 minutes or so I had a nice stable fire established in the Ozpig.
My aim was to season the Ozpig, burn in the paint and see what heat was thrown out . . . but 5 or 6 logs later, i’d consumed a few drinks and had been sitting outside for nearly 4 hours.
I’d been bitten by the fire bug once more . . . and was happy that I’d found a company that I could source quality firewood from that shared the same values as I do . . . great times!
